BRANDSTATTER'S CAFE MONTMARTRE
The Cafe Montmartre is generally considered Hollywood's first nightclub. Opened in 1923 by restaurateur, Adolph "Eddie" Brandstatter, the club quickly became a Hollywood hot-spot, in part due to its Saturday afternoon tea dances and Tuesday Charleston contests (often won by Joan Crawford). It has been reported that during prohibition regular Montmartre patrons enjoyed descretly-served alcoholic libations. The Montmartre was located on the second floor of the Italian Renaissance-style building located at 6763 Hollywood Boulevard. While the club is long gone, the building it occupied is still there. |
